Cannon G11 Digital Camera Review

Cannon finally figured out that their PowerShot series of cameras didn’t need all of those pixels in order to produce great photographs, so the new G-11 has 10.0 megapixels versus the G-10’s 14.7 megapixel resolution.

Now, unlike the SD1200 IS and the SD780 IS PowerShot cameras the Cannon G-11 provides for you to take photographs in the RAW and JPEG shooting formats.

You may wonder why this is important; however, if you have ever worked with PhotoShop then you understand how useful shooting your images in the RAW can be. Shooting in the RAW provides much greater flexibility to “fix” problems with photographs you have taken as you manipulate them in PhotoShop while not losing the quality of your photograph.

According to Cannon the G-11 is designed for those who are looking for a pocket-sized camera with SLR (Single Lens Reflex) functionality. This camera is for those of you who are looking to capture beautiful landscapes and professional looking portraits.

What’s in the box:

  • PowerShot G11;
  • Lithium Battery Pack;
  • Battery Charger;
  • Neck Strap;
  • Digital Camera Solution CD-ROM;
  • USB Interface Cable;
  • AV Cable.

The PowerShot G11 has the retro look of a classic rangefinder camera with a metal and composite body with fit and finish which are first rate. The rounded edges and rectangular body of the Cannon G11 a built-in grip for a secure feel for one-handed shooting.

The top and back of the camera are filled with controls, but the shooting finger falls right into place above the shutter release button. Despite fingers across the controls on the back of the camera inadvertent activations are not a problem.

Anyone familiar with Cannon cameras will feel right at home with this one. Newcomers will find the camera highly intuitive to manage, set up and use, making it a great beginner digital camera.

There are 10 primary shooting modes:

  • Auto – the camera handles all of the settings while the photographer chooses image size, flash enable and self-timer settings;
  • Low Light – an automatic mode recommended for candlelit or low light services;
  • Quick Shot – an automatic mode which requires the photographer to use the viewfinder;
  • Scene – an automatic mode with 14 specific scenes to choose from;
  • Program Auto – camera handles both aperture and shutter speed settings;
  • Shutter Priority – the photographer chooses the shutter speed while the camera chooses aperture;
  • Aperture Priority – the photographer chooses aperture while the camera chooses shutter speed;
  • Manual – the photographer sets both aperture and shutter speed;
  • Custom – the photographer can create 2 custom selections that can be recalled quickly;>/li>
  • Movie – capture about 1 hour of 640X480 video.

While the camera has an optical viewfinder it only covers about 75% of what the camera sees making composition somewhat difficult. The viewfinder does not display significant portions of the image above, below and on the sides.

We are convinced that you will be very pleased with the image quality produced by this camera. With white balance settings for daylight, cloudy days, tungsten lighting, fluorescent lighting, flash, underwater and custom settings in addition to the automatic white balance functions.

Overall a terrific starter digital camera for those of you who want more control over the camera as you progress in your ability to take better and better photographs.

Get yourself one of these terrific Cannon G11 PowerShot Digital Cameras and start taking lots of photos of your kids – you will be glad you did!
