Cannon Rebel T1i Digital Camera Review

OK, so now you have had some fun with your small point-and-shoot camera, and you are ready to move up to a better camera and you are confused by all of the choices, perhaps apprehensive of the cost. Well, we have the solution for you. The Cannon EOS DSLR Rebel T1i Digital Camera is a great option as you move up from your point-and-shot camera.

This camera was Cannon’s first DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera to feature both full high-definition video capture and the highest quality stills all in the same device. The T1i was designed to offer any photographer, regardless of experience, an easy-to-use camera which is capable of total control or just point and shoot.

With more resolution than the Cannon Rebel XSi or Cannon Rebel XS, and an even more advanced auto system called Creative Auto (CA), this camera helps amateur photographers look like pros. The CA mode helps beginners explore creative photography without the necessity of learning the nuances of aperture and shutter speed settings.

Another interesting feature is the ability for photographers to control shooting with more precision by allowing you to adjust flash output, depth of field with a slider called “Background” and exposure. The new CA mode allows you to choose your Picture Style, image size and quality, and continuous shooting or single-shot drive mode.

The array of buttons on the camera include the standard shutter release, the main dial wheel for changing you settings like aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation, as well as buttons to set ISO and to engage an exterior flash. In addition is the mode dial which quickly lets you choose automatic to manual shooting modes, as well as scene modes like Sports and HD video.

One of the strong points of this camera is the shooting information which can be displayed on the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) on the back of the camera body. When you use the optical viewfinder you can see shutter speed, aperture, ISO, exposure compensation, flash exposure, Picture Styles, white balance, metering, image quality settings, AF (auto-focus) mode and drive mode all in one place.

If you click on the Set button you can change any of these settings directly from the screen. The Cannon T1i has 13 basic shooting modes:

  • Program – the camera automatically sets optimal shutter and aperture speed;
  • Shutter Priority – you control shutter speed while aperture is automatically set by the camera;
  • Aperture Priority – you control the aperture while shutter speed is automatically set by the camera;
  • Manual – allows you to control both aperture and shutter speed along with the camera’s different settings for exposure;
  • A-DEP – will automatically set the appropriate aperture to ensure that depth of field covers all of your focus points;
  • Auto – in this mode the camera sets all values;
  • Creative Auto – lets you change brightness, depth of field and color tone;
  • Portrait – this setting will automatically blur the background by providing a shallow depth of field emphasizing your subject;
  • Landscape – provides you with more depth of field for landscape and wide angle shots;
  • Macro – depending upon your lens this mode allows you to get in really close to your subject like a flower;
  • Sports – enacts the continuous burst mode to catch moving objects or sports;
  • Night Portrait – allows you to take portrait photos at night;
  • Flash Off – forces the flash unit off so you can use ambient light to get the best exposure.

The LCD is impressive on the T1i and shows faithful color reproduction and accurate images between the LCD and your computer. Image stabilization, however, is built into the lenses and not the camera body, so if you don’t use an IS lens your can’t get image stabilization.

The lithium-ion 1080 mAh battery provides a lot of shooting power allowing you to use the camera all day, shoot some video and still have a reserve available.

This camera has great auto focus performance in most lighting situations, even at night, and regardless of your skill level the T1i is easy to figure out once you use if for a few minutes.

Both video quality and image quality are excellent and for both the beginner and the pro this camera performs almost as well as its bigger brother, the Cannon 50D, but at a much better price. With a price around $ 469.72 you can get an excellent camera at a great price with most of the features of a professional camera.
