Most of you will recognize Cannon’s penchant for style, and the Cannon SD780 IS is no exception. The alloy-clad body is solid along with the kind of attention to detail and simple operation Cannon is known for. The control system for the camera is Cannon’s traditional style with a small but manageable four-way controller to navigate the menus and provide access to functions like flash mode and exposure compensation. Using a 3-way switch you can quickly move between Smart Auto, Program/Scene and Movie modes so that even the most novice photographer will have little trouble finding the right settings. While the optical viewfinder is very small and lacking a bit in accuracy, it is better to have a viewfinder than to not have one, especially in bright sunlight or while taking those important action shots. There are 2 auto-focus modes on the camera, the Face AiAF which combines face detection and multi-area auto-focus mode, and a center-point auto-focus mode. The lens has a 3x tele-zoom feature providing 33 to 100mm equivalent zoom, and is optically stabilized in design. The tiny flash has the basic on, off, auto and slow synchro settings common on Cannon’s line of point-and-shoot cameras. It uses an ultra-thin and lightweight 760mAh lithium-ion power pack providing around 200 shots before needing to be replaced.
