Consider Taking High Resolution Photographs

This is a high resolution photograph

The term resolution is one that is used frequently in the world of digital photography and it can refer to several different areas of the process. For example, it can refer to image size, viewing size or print size. As respects digital cameras themselves, resolution normally refers to the size and number of pixels of the images that are captured by the camera. A digital SLR camera will allow you choices of resolution which translates into the quality of your images. To obtain the best quality images in the resolution area, you should always take high resolution photographs even though this may mean getting a card that holds more information than your current one.

Digital cameras are frequently referred to in terms of the resolution. For example, the camera may be referred to as having 12 million pixels or 12 megapixels. This represents the total number of pixels in an image and is a figure used by the manufacturer when they refer to the resolution for the camera at its best or highest setting. For instance, a digital SLR that can capture an image at 4200 x 2800 pixels has a resolution of approximately 12,000,000, or 12 megapixels.

Most digital SLR cameras have a least three resolution settings which can normally be accessed from the shooting menu under the heading of resolution or image size. Physically changing this setting alters the number of pixels that are captured for any particular image. The settings are usually described as small medium or large. Obviously, the larger the number of pixels in an image, the greater the resulting file size will be once the images have been captured.

Always Consider Resolution Before Taking Photographs

See the loss of detail in the face of the girl in this low resolution photograph?

Since resolution affects the image’s size and quality, the issue of which resolution you should use is one that should be considered carefully before you start taking photographs. The main question you want to answer is whether you want to print the image or display it on a computer. If you plan on printing the image a larger number of pixels are required to produce a good quality photograph. In that situation you should consider taking high resolution photographs.

The picture on the right is a cut out of the face of the girl in the above picture. This is a photograph emphasizing the effects of low resolution in photography. There is nothing you can do to bring out the detail in this image except to make it smaller. That is why taking your pictures in the highest resolution possible is always the safest.

If you’re only interested in displaying the photograph on a computer, then a lower number of pixels will work quite well and you can use a lower resolution. However, it is always best to be on the safe side and capture all your images at the highest resolution possible, and then, using a program like Adobe Photoshop CS5, you can reduce them for the particular use you want the image for.

Adobe Photoshop CS5 Is A Wonderful Tool To Make Your Best Photos Into Beautiful Images!

When you work on an image with a program such as Adobe Photoshop CS5 it will involve removing some of the pixels from the image. Pixels can be added to an image to increase its size, but is always best to capture your image at the highest resolution possible in the first place.  The reason, this is the best, is because you never know when you’re going to capture that really special image that you may want to have put on canvas.  These pictures are what I consider to be “fine art photos” and you can create ” fine art images” of your children with them. When I send in a image to Canvas On Demand to have printed as a picture on canvas, I bump the resolution in Adobe Photoshop CS5 to about 550 and re-size the picture as a 16X24 or whatever size the canvas will be.  However, this can be only done successfully with an image that is already a high resolution image. That gives you a superb canvas image with rich deep colors!!

Until next time take lots and lots of pictures!
