Summer Time In The Gorchard
Well, it’s that time again. In my gorchard (that’s my combination garden and orchard) I have a yellow transparent apple tree that I planted a number of years ago. In fact, I have two – just in case. Throughout the year I take care of the tree, protecting it from the resident deer population with fencing, spraying it for bugs and pruning at the appropriate time of the year.
This year the harvest has been bountiful, with bushels and bushels of apples. Years ago when my youngest sister was born as the eldest I was asked to cook for the family while my mother was in the hospital. In those days mothers spent more time in the hospital, typically 3-5 days after giving birth.
As it turns out that was harvest time for the yellow transparent apples in my parents front yard. Again, bushels and bushels of apples to turn into apple sauce. My father even remarked once that the only thing Betty knows how to cook is apple sauce. I guess he forgot about the rest of the meals I prepared. Oh well …
My grand daughter loves to help me, particularly when I am making apple sauce. This is not the chunky kind, but rather the smooth kind. While both the grandkids love apple sauce, they only really love the apple sauce Nana makes! And my grand daughter stands around just waiting for the warm, fresh off the stove apple sauce!
So there she is, wide smile on her face, sticky hands and face and loving the warm apple sauce. A great time to quickly wash my hands, grab my camera and capture the moment! The best photographs of children are those you take on the spur of the moment, when something unusual and special happens. Making sure your batteries are fresh and charged, spares close at hand, and the camera handy are important things when you want to photograph children and get that “real kids” look.
And those are the photographs that make the best pictures to print on canvas, or to print on a mug, apron or other gift items for those special occasions that seem to crop up when you are least prepared. Not to worry, I’ve uploaded my photos to Photoworks, a couple of clicks later and the gifts are on their way.
The photographs I have printed on canvas, however, take more work. For those I spend some quality time with Photoshop and the raw image to make sure it is exactly the way I saw it, and exactly the way I want it. Then upload it to Canvas on Demand and the next thing you know I have another work of art to decorate my home with.
Taking great photographs of the grand kids, or children in general, is so rewarding. They grow so quickly and change so much that recording that journey is not only fun but helps establish the family history. That’s why my passion is photographing children, and why I urge each of you to not waste another moment and get your camera handy and take lots of photos.
I know you will not regret it.
